Junior infants are now learning to read sight words. They are spending lots of time learning them in school and at home. We had lots of fun this week playing some sight word games to help us to read them independently. We rotate around the classroom in a carousel so that we have time to play all the games in one lesson.

We had a great week learning all about penguins. We read the story The Emperors Egg, and learned lots of interesting penguin facts. We have had a very exciting start to this very cold month of January. We are learning all about Polar Regions. We are all excellent polar explorers, and are exploring Arctic areas every day during Aistear. We can choose to be Arctic animals,or Inuits in the role play corner. We can guide the snow mobiles through the snow in our wet area(watch out for the Penguins !). We love our small world Arctic scene, it's lots of fun playing with all the polar bears and ice bergs. We are also building igloos in our construction and Márla area. Thank you to all the parents and boys and girls who kindly donated milk cartons to construct our igloo! On Wednesday our National Flag and a copy of the Proclamation were presented to the eldest and youngest child in our school by members of the army. This was to commemorate the centeenary of 1916 rising. We had lots of fun this month in our role play corner. The boys and girls designed toys in the drawing area and posted them into the design box for the elves to make in santa's workshop. The elves were very busy making the toys, packaging and distributing them into Santa's sleigh. Santa and Mrs Claus were also very busy in the workshop. Mrs Claus seemed to be making cookies for everyone daily and Santa liked to work in the quality control area making sure the toys were up to his high standards. This month we learned all about Toys from the past. We asked our parents and grandparents lots of questions about the toys they used to play with when they were in Infants. We noticed many differences compared to the toys we like to play with now . We discussed what materials these toys were made of and how each of them worked. Thankyou Wonu,Ella,Martina and Aminat for helping us to decorate our Christmas cookies today. We had lots of fun getting our fingers sticky and they tasted yummy too! We were so lucky in school today, Santa came to visit us! He told us that we were all on his good list and he can't wait to deliver presents to us on Thursday night. He reminded us to go to bed early and make sure we were all on our very best behaviour over the next few days!! Thank you to all the parents for joining us today. A huge well done to all the fantastic, talented boys and girls who took part in our Nativity Play. All of your hard work definitely paid off and we are all very proud of you ! Thankyou so much to Molly and Katie's dad Roy for making a handcrafted Crib for our classroom. We are so grateful and it looks perfect on our window sill ! Today is the first day of Advent. We are very busy getting ready for Christmas in our classroom. I'm really looking forward to choosing some lucky boys and girls to enjoy treats from our Advent calendar this year ! We have been learning all about food that comes from animals this week. We have played lots of fun matching games, and explored this further in our small world area during Aistear. We really enjoyed learning where our food comes from ! |
